We are heading into fall, so the flu/cold season is upon us. Over the years, I have received many questions about natural solutions or remedies and what to keep on hand in case sickness hits your home. After thinking about it, I realized this would be a fun blog post. I decided compiling a list here for everyone to refer to when needed would be great. So, I will share some of my all-time favorite holistic and natural solutions to add to your natural medicine cabinet. Moreover, being prepared and keeping things on hand to boost and support your immune system is key. Bonus points – it will also help you recover more quickly (and effectively) from sickness.

natural-medicine-cabinet

Did you know it is good and beneficial for your body to get sick occasionally – say about twice a year or so? When I first heard this in my nutritional therapy training, I was blown away by how amazing the body is – especially when given the right tools to thrive.

Getting a cold, the flu, or even a low-grade fever is not something we should fear. In fact, it is a natural process, which means that the immune system, adrenals, and rest of the body are functioning correctly.

It is more important to focus on effectively supporting the body in healing from the illness. So, this is where a natural medicine cabinet comes in very handy.

Did you know that when people brag about never getting sick, they might be dealing with adrenal dysfunction or other health issues? I understand that most people don’t have the time to get sick and that being sick is absolutely no fun, but it is not something that should be feared.

The best way to arm yourself is to be prepared, have natural solutions on hand, and, most importantly, know how to use them.

Ideally, you don’t want to wait until you are fully engulfed by sickness before doing something about it.

So many beautiful remedies are very effective in calming symptoms, all while building up the immune system simultaneously. When sick, boosting your immune system is the most critical step.

I want to be clear and transparent – I am not above taking medicine when necessary. When choosing modern medicine, supporting the immune system is just as important (if not more important). The problem with taking pharmaceuticals is that they give a false sense of reality. For example, it does not remove the virus or illness; it only makes the symptoms more manageable. As a result, this leads to the belief that energy levels are increasing, which leads to going on with life, and more often than not, it finally leads to overexerting. This process generally results in a relapse, getting sick again (more severely this time), or a weakened immune response.

Being prepared is key. Additionally, always remember; hydration, rest, and nourishing foods!

I try to pinpoint what is going on when I feel the slightest onset of sickness or feeling unwell. Then I act according to whatever protocol I have in place. Overall, it is amazing how being dedicated and consistent will help me recover really well.

Creating a natural medicine cabinet

*Please note: I can’t possibly account for every contradiction to these natural remedies, so please research and consult your medical practitioner first.

I simply share things that have worked for my family over the years.

Colds, flu, upper respiratory infections, sore throats, or sinus infections

Vitamin C

I use vitamin C powder daily for immune and adrenal support, and I love it! You can increase the amount slightly before an upcoming trip or vacation or if you feel a little run down. This is also generally safe for kids to take but divide the dosage appropriately. Always remember, not all vitamin C is made equally, and you want to get one that is pure, made from whole food, and bioavailable.

Recommended:: Pure Synergy Pure Radiance C, Perfect Supplements Acerola Vitamin C Superfood

Oregano Oil

Oregano oil is potent with antibiotic and anti-fungal properties. Moreover, due to its powerful properties, it is important to note that oregano oil should only be taken for 10-14 days. In conclusion, some contradictions exist to oregano oil, which should never be taken when pregnant. Also, discontinue the use of probiotics for the duration of oregano usage.

Recommended:: Gaia Oregano Oil (available on my Fullscript dispensary)

Quick Defense Capsules

These are extremely potent, especially at the onset of sinus infection symptoms. Moreover, the rapid immune response at onset is due to the echinacea, black elderberry, ginger root & Andrographis. It can be taken with the oil of oregano for a severe case of sinus infection.

Recommended:: Gaia Quick Defense

Elderberry Syrup

Elderberry syrup is one of my favorite immune boosters to keep on hand during winter or traveling. Some do great with it, and some don’t – you must test it yourself. Always look for pure elderberry syrup – since gaining so much popularity, many of these syrups are filled with a lot of extra fillers and artificial sweeteners. Elderberry syrup is an immune system stimulator, so you must be cautious when taking it during pregnancy.

Recommended:: Earthly Elderberry Exlir Herbal Extract, Moutain Rose Herb Elderberry Syrup, Organic Olivia Elderberry Immune Elixir

Superfood Honey with Propolis

Honey, royal jelly, propolis, and bee pollen combo are among my favorite immune boosters to keep on hand during winter or when traveling. Furthermore, propolis contains over 300 powerful natural compounds renowned for helping support immunity and protecting well-being.

Recommended:: Beekeeper’s Naturals Superfood Honey (also available on my Fullscript dispensary)

Mushrooms

Medicinal mushrooms are a worthy addition to any natural medicine cabinet. In my opinion, mushrooms are so underrated. As I have said before, these tiny powerhouses are immune modulating, meaning they can up or down-regulate the immune function as needed.

Recommended:: Wild Wholistic The Resilient Body, Wild Wholistic The Mushroom Tonic, Organic Olivia ImmuneShroom, Prefect Supplements Mushroom Immunity

Immune Supporting/Boosting Herbs

I am such a giant fan of plants and herbs and everything they have to offer.  Furthermore, I find them so effective and powerful when used consistently, especially with cold and flu symptoms.
* Please note that many herbs do have pregnancy and nursing contradictions – so please choose the ones that are right for you.

Recommended:: Wild Wholistic Lung Shield, Wild Wholistic The Healing Body, Organic Olivia Chest Comfort Syrup, Mountain Rose Herbs Immune Care Extract, Earthly Immune-Biotic, Earthly Feel Better Fast, Earthly Sinus Saver

Homeopathy

I also love to use homeopathy, but consistency and narrowing down symptoms are key. Evidently, homeopathy works best if you take it immediately at the onset of any acute symptoms.

Recommended:: Boiron Adult + Children’s ColdCalm (available on my Fullscript dispensary), Boiron Oscillococcinum (available on my Fullscript dispensary), Seroyal/Unda Drosera Plex Cough Syrup (available on my Fullscript dispensary)
Other recommendations:: Homeopathy Family Kit, The Complete Homeopathy Handbook

Bioactive Carbon Binders

These binders are great to have on hand for viral infections, stomach bugs, or even sore throats.  For a sore throat, simply break open capsules in water and sip on them to coat the back of the throat.   Bonus point for not having to take these binders away from food or other supplements. *ordering details for Cellcore Biosciences are at the bottom of this post.

Recommended:: Cellcore Biosciences Biotoxin Binder, Cellcore Biosciences ViradChem Binder

Cough Syrup

Cough syrups are generally full of all sorts of nasty and harmful ingredients.

Recommended:: Homemade Cough ElixirBeekeeper’s Naturals B.Better Cough Syrup, Beekeeper’s Natural B.Better Nighttime Cough Syrup, Cough Be Gone Herbal Extract

Cough Drops/Throat Drops

I find these to be very effective. Please, check other brands to stay clear of all the added artificial sweeteners and fillers.

Recommended:: doTerra OnGuard Throat Drops, doTerra Breathe Respiratory Drops, Beekeeper’s Naturals B.Soothed Honey Lozenges

Throat Spray

This is great for a sore throat – especially for kids who don’t like the taste of apple cider vinegar.

Recommended:: Organic Olivia Soothe Your Throat Spray, Earthly Herbal Throat Spray, Beekeeper’s Naturals B Immune Throat Spray (also available on my Fullscript dispensary)

Raw Apple Cider Vinegar

Everyone needs to have some raw apple cider vinegar in their kitchen. It is so versatile. Hence, it can be used as a daily immune booster, taking 1-2 spoonsful daily. After all, it is also very effective when gargling at the onset of a sore throat. The apple cider will help balance the pH, which generally removes the pain.

Recommended:: Bragg’s Organic Raw Apple Cider Vinegar

Immunity Tea

We drink this tea even when we aren’t sick as it supports the immune system, but we will double down at the onset of symptoms.

Directions:: There is really no special formula. Add clean filtered water to a big stockpot and set to high heat, then add the following kitchen ingredients: a handful of organic orange peels (or dried orange peels), a handful of peeled ginger chunks (or dried ginger root), 1-2 sprigs of rosemary sprigs, a pinch of fennel seeds, a pinch of whole cloves, 2-3 whole star anise pods (if you feel adventurous you can add a quarter onion as well). Simmer the mixture for 20-30 minutes. Add to a big cup of green tea, and sip.

Recommended:: Organic Olivia Guardian Tea

Strep Throat

Strep throat can be brutal, but the following combination of herbal tinctures and remedies effectively combat strep throat. Another option is strep throat honey if you don’t have anything on hand immediately.  Also, consider homeopathy in combination with the suggestions below.

Directions:: Combine 4 minced garlic cloves, 4 tbsp raw honey, 1/8 tsp cayenne pepper, and 1/8 tsp ground cinnamon in a small bowl, let it sit on the counter for a few minutes, and then take 1/2 teaspoon every half hour. Let it coat the back of the throat without washing it down with liquid.

Recommended:: Biocidin Botanicals (available on my Fullscript dispensary), Biotics Research BioImmunozyme Forte (available on my Fullscript dispensary), Natura Health Products Throat & Gland (available on my Fullscript dispensary)

Mustard Chest Pack

Secondary infections like bacterial pneumonia are not super uncommon with upper respiratory infections. Mustard is rubefacient. Due to this property, the mustard can stimulate blood circulation by dilating the blood capillaries. Applying mustard (or even sautee onions) over the lungs will help open them up and encourage the expectoration of mucus that may be trapped. Moreover, by stimulating the movement of phlegm (by stimulating a cough), you can help prevent those secondary infections.

Directions:: Mustard Chest Pack

Immune Boosting Shot

I love making these little shots because they are easy to make and taste amazing. Basically, you drink it throughout the day when you are sick or as needed for additional immune support.

Recommended:: Orange & Ginger Immune Boosting Shots, Wellness Shot, Flu & Cold Remedy Shot

A Natural Medicine Cabinet Guide 4

Ear Infections

Garlic Oil

This is fantastic for earaches! Simply place a few drops of warmed oil in the ear, laying on your side for 15-20 minutes to allow the oils to drip in. Also, you can place a small cotton ball in the ear to avoid staining your pillows – repeat on the other side if necessary.

Recommended:: Earthly Earache Ease, Mountain Rose Herbs Ear Oil, Herb Pharm Mullein Garlic Oil (available on my Fullscript dispensary)

Homeopathy

I also love to use homeopathy, but consistency and narrowing down symptoms are key. However, homeopathy works best if you take it immediately at the onset of any acute symptoms.

Recommended:: Homeopathy Family Kit, The Complete Homeopathy Handbook

Pink Eye

Homeopathic Eye Drops

These drops won’t necessarily cure pink eye, but they will definitely help with the itchy and irritated eye symptoms.

Recommended:: Similasan USA Pink Eye Relieve Drops

Homeopathy

I also love to use homeopathy, but consistency and narrowing down symptoms are key. However, homeopathy works best if you take it immediately at the onset of any symptoms.  Also, consider using it in conjunction with some of the other natural remedies.

Recommended:: Homeopathy Family Kit, The Complete Homeopathy Handbook

Briotech Topical Spray

This stuff is simply fantastic – super inexpensive with multiple ways to use it. Gently spray it on the eye at the onset of symptoms and continue to use it consistently until the desired improvement. As a matter of fact, it is also very effective for a stye.

Recommended:: Briotech Topical Skin Spray

Raw Honey Drops

Raw honey is a powerhouse of antimicrobial and antifungal properties. As a result, it can be used for many different illnesses or acute onset of symptoms.

Directions:: Simply dissolve 1/3 tsp of raw honey with 1/3 cup of clean, filtered, warm water. Place 1-2 drops in each eye 4-5 times daily or as needed.

Tea Poultice

Directions:: Simply take 2 organic green tea bags and steep (I like using green loose-leaf tea in a cotton tea net). Let them cool completely.  Add a small splash of raw organic apple cider vinegar and lay the tea bags directly over the eyes for 10-15 minutes.

Recommended:: Mountain Rose Herbs Green Tea, Cotton Tea Net, Raw Apple Cider Vinegar

Nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea

Phosphorus

I remember growing up and even into my young adult life, everyone always recommended drinking Sprite when feeling nauseous – the fact that it worked always alluded to carbonation. When in fact, it is the high percentage of phosphorus in soda that did the trick. Now you can ditch the tap water, sugar, caffeine, and all the other questionable ingredients and go straight for the phosphorus to help ease nausea.

Recommended:: Biotics Research Phosphozyem Liquid (available on my Fullscript dispensary)

Tummy Aches

Herbal remedies are my favorite to ease upset tummies and other digestive issues.

Recommended:: Earthly Diges-Ease Herbal Extract, Mountain Rose Herbs Tummy Care Extract, Wise Women Herbals Tummy Glycerite (available on my Fullscript dispensary)

Bioactive Carbon Binders

These binders are great to have on hand for stomach bugs or even the stomach flu. Even more, the binders can mop up and bind to the pathogens responsible for the discomfort. Bonus point for not having to take these binders away from food or other supplements. *ordering details for Cellcore Biosciences are at the bottom of this post.

Recommended:: Cellcore Biosciences Biotoxin Binder, Cellcore Biosciences ViradChem Binder

Sporebased Probiotic

A probiotic is an excellent support for the good stomach microbes to fight the “bad” bug that made you sick in the first place. This spore-based probiotic is unique as it not only supports friendly microbes but it actually removes unwanted elements. *ordering details for Cellcore Biosciences are at the bottom of this post.

Recommended:: Cellcore Biosciences CT-Biotic, Microbiome Labs MegaSporeBiotic (available on my Fullscript dispensary)

Minerals

Dehydration is a genuine concern when suffering from vomiting and/or diarrhea, and hydration is critical. These options of electrolytes are a game-changer as they are filled with bioavailable, bacteriologically pure, naturally sterile minerals and trace elements. They are also fantastic for a host of other ailments.

Recommended:: Quicksilver Scientific Original Quinton Hypertonic Ampoules or Liter Bottle (available on my Fullscript dispensary)

Essential Oils

Avoid touching your face after using these “hot” oils, as they will burn your eyes.

Headaches or migraines

Anti-inflammatory Tonic

This stuff is fantastic for the onset of a headache or migraine. Generally, it is so effective because it is a full spectrum extraction with all the gingerols, curcuminoids, and natural oils found in the raw roots. The absorption begins in the mouth, bypassing the digestive system.

Recommended:: Wild Wholistic The Healing Body

CBD Oil

I love Equilibria for CBD oil, and just like supplements, not all CBD oil is made equally. How does it work? CBD oil helps to reduce inflammation by binding to the pain receptors to reduce pain – it is so effective for most people.

Magnesium

Magnesium can be very helpful in supporting and clearing up headaches and migraines.
