Your mouth can tell you so much about what is going on in your body, and your overall health.

In the last several months I have come to learn that the connection between the mouth and the body is way stronger than most of us would even think.  A lot of people think that the is far-fetched to think that the mouth affects the health of blood vessels, the brain, the liver, the gut, and even the immune system.

Microorganisms lodged and hidden in your mouth can truly impact every single part of your body, and most of the time we tend to respond by thinking that is all simply in our heads.

The Dangers Of Silent Oral Infections aka Cavitations 1

You can see some of the cavitation pockets at the back of my jaw, where my wisdom teeth used to be.

Teeth are living tissues.  They may seem solid, but they are actually pretty porous with fluid constantly flowing through them. This fluid is responsible for cleansing all the layers of the tooth.

This process creates an environment for microbiomes to live and thrive.  Once an infection from tooth decay reaches the root of the tooth – you generally have two options 1) a root canal or 2) pull the tooth.  Unfortunately, both of these choices can lead to hidden and silent infections near the bone which will eventually lead to systemic disease.

This post will mostly focus on cavitations from extracted teeth, but it is important to understand that root canals (and amalgam fillings) also pose a huge risk to overall health.

In short, a tooth with a root canal no longer has the fluid flowing through it, which creates the perfect environment for harmful and unhealthy bacteria to grow deep inside, close to the bone.  The tooth is essentially dead and has zero oxygen flowing through it, and this creates the perfect breeding ground for a low-grade, long-term infection to fester and persist.  This can contribute to a number of health conditions, autoimmune diseases, etc.  This infection can also travel to other parts of the body like the heart, causing heart attacks and other issues.

In traditional Chinese medicine, each tooth is connected and corresponds to a different organ in the body.  It works as an integrative mind-body system.

The dental relationship chart, based on the original chart developed by Dr. Fritz Kramer, with some changes by Klinghardt/Williams.

What is a cavitation?

Cavitations are simply the infection of unhealed bone where a tooth has been extracted – this applies to any extracted tooth, not just wisdom teeth.  It is simply a section of the jaw bone that didn’t fill in properly after tooth extraction.  If the tooth and cavity are not cleaned properly (preferably with ozone) and the periodontal ligament is not extracted with the tooth, infection due to untreated and unflushed bacteria or the infection that caused the tooth decay in the first place will move into the bone.  These hidden infections are hard to find, they occasionally show up on x-rays but conventionally trained dentists aren’t trained to see them.  This is why it is super important to visit a biological dentist who is trained and knows exactly what to look for.

These cavitation infections tend to be silent, you generally don’t feel them, there is no pain, and you don’t even know there is a problem.

How do you know if you have cavitations?

As mentioned before generally these infections tend to be silent, with no pain.  I now recommend that all my clients who have had a root canal or tooth extraction done by a conventional dentist, visit a biological dentist to screen them for hidden infections before starting on any detox protocol.  This approach would’ve saved me thousands of dollars.

Biological or holistic dentists use a Conebeam scan which is the current standard for detecting jaw bone abnormalities.  On rare occasions, these infections can be picked up from a 2D panoramic x-ray – like mine above.

Chronic health conditions related to cavitations.

Today it is believed that various bacteria from cavitations spread through the body and have severe systemic health consequences in the form of chronic illness, autoimmune disease, different types of cancers, diabetes, and even heart disease.  Cavitations have a major effect on immune function.

What is the treatment for cavitations?

The good news is that cavitations are largely avoidable if you have a skilled holistic/biological dentist that is trained in removing the periodontal ligament as well as properly cleaning the underlying bone.

If this isn’t your story, that is okay – there is hope and so much that can be done.  The best treatment that I have found for these hidden oral infections is cavitation surgery and ozone treatment.

Once cavitations are detected in a cone beam scan it is possible to open up the old extraction site, remove the old dying and decaying tissues and bone, while thoroughly cleaning the area with ozone.  In order to prevent another infection from forming, it is important that the dentist performing the surgery use PRP  (platelet-rich plasma) on the surgical site (before suturing.)  This simply delivers critical growth factors and stimulates blood flow so proper healing can finally occur.

What is PFP?
PFP stands for platelet-rich plasma.   A small amount of blood is drawn and put into a centrifuge.  The blood is then spun until it separates into red blood cells, white blood cells, and plasma or platelets.  The platelets are then infused with ozone, and placed on the surgical site before suturing.

If cavitations have played a role in long-term chronic health, it is a great idea to follow a systemic detox protocol to support the body’s natural healing capabilities.

The fact is that your body can only truly heal when your mouth is healthy.

Steps to take.

1. If you suspect that you have cavitations, use this website to find a trained and qualified biological/holistic dentist in your area.

2. Call the dental office, and ask all the questions you have, in my experience when their office is worthwhile they will take the time to talk and explain their procedures and protocols with you.

3. Once you decide this is the place for you, schedule an appointment for a cone beam scan as well as an initial examination.

4. If you find out that you do indeed have cavitations, schedule an appointment.  I personally recommend sedation, especially if the surgery sites will cross the mid-line of the body, meaning both sides of the mouth.

5. Prepare for the surgery, support your body on a foundational level (opening drainage pathways, nutrient-dense foods, quality sleep, meal prepping for after – think soups, smoothies, broths)

6. Once the surgery is complete allow your body to heal for 10-14 days before starting any intense detoxification protocol.

Lastly, this procedure can be pricey, and insurance generally doesn’t cover it.  I would gladly pay this all over again, besides cutting out toxic relationships and influences over the years, this was the single most profound thing that I have ever done to improve my health.  It has been almost five months, and I have never ever felt this well in my entire adult life.  I also used the CellCore protocol for systemic detoxification since my infections fester for 15 years!

How to detox after cavitation surgery?

It is extremely important to take the time and effort to do a dental detox after cavitation surgery even when you see a biological/holistic dentist.

This protocol will look different for everyone depending on your chronic illness status beforehand.

I personally recommend the Cellcore Biosciences Foundational Protocol or Comprehensive Protocol, depending on symptoms and health history. *ordering instructions for Cellcore supplements will be at the bottom of this post.

In addition to these protocols, I recommend high dose Vitamin C supplementation, beef liver capsules, vitamin K, as well as magnesium – I love Smidge Morning and Evening Magnesium (available on my Fullscript dispensary), as well as this liquid form.

Nutrition after cavitation surgery.

During the first 10-14 days it may be difficult and painful to eat regular meals that require chewing, your body however still requires nutrients in order to function and heal.  During this time I focused heavily on homemade broths (chicken or beef), all kinds of smoothies (I added colostrum powder)  lots of raw milk, plain cultured yogurt with raw honey, homemade ice cream, mashed potatoes (with raw butter, buttermilk, parmesan, sour cream, garlic, sea salt, pepper, and cayenne.)

After this period of time, it is quite simple.  Your diet should be free of all processed foods, artificial sweeteners, junk food, and highly processed vegetable oils and you should limit alcohol consumption.  Focus on eating nutrient-dense real whole foods: organic fruits and vegetables, pastured meats, organ meats (like beef liver) and eggs, raw dairy, fermented foods, properly prepared grains, nuts, seeds, and legumes, and healthy fats.  Drink plenty of filtered water with added minerals.

Other detoxification supportive therapies.

 Oil Pulling
 Castor Oil Packs
Near-Infrared Sauna (this is the at-home one I have)
♦ Coffee Enemas
Epsom Salt + Baking Soda Baths
 Dry brushing
 Rebounding
