How much water should you drink every day?  This topic is always at the top of the discussion list.  Before we answer how much, we should understand and see how important water is to the body.

Water is the most important “nutrient” in the body.  Therefore, it makes up about 55%-60% (10-13 gallons) of our body mass and is in all our tissue.  A human can go several weeks without food but only a few days without water.

All the roles of water in the body are incredible.  As a result, if people could fully grasp this, they would gladly trade in soda for real hydration.

Here is a little list of some of the essential things water does to support the body as a whole:

  • improves oxygen delivery to cells.
  • enables cellular hydration.
  • transports nutrients.
  • cushions bones and joints.
  • removes wastes and flushes toxins from the body.
  • regulates body temperature.
  • prevents tissues from sticking.
  • lubricates the joints.
  • maintains normal electrical properties of the cells.
  • improves cell-to-cell communications.
  • empowers the body’s natural healing process.

Just from this list, you can see that daily water consumption is so vital for a healthy, functioning body.

Did you know that dry mouth is the very last sign of dehydration?  For example, you are not just thirsty when your mouth is dry.  It tells you you are experiencing extreme dehydration and to do something about it.

So now that we have established that water is critical for our overall well-being, how much water should we drink?

A good rule of thumb is to drink half your body weight in ounces of water daily.  For example, if a person weighs 150 pounds, this person should drink at least 75 ounces of bio-available water daily.  Any other drink that is not water does not count as water.  Water is water – plain and simple.  It is also important to remember that for any additional diuretic beverage (soda, energy drinks), you need to drink an extra 12-16 ounces per 8-ounce cup that you are consuming.

What is bio-available water?

Bioavailable water is simply clean and filtered water (if you drink tap water – please stop) with added minerals.  I like adding some Icelandic sea salt flakes or Quinton Isotonic minerals for electrolytes.  Also, remember to include minerals-rich real food into your diet to help support healthy hydration.

So many excellent drinking water filtration systems are available for every budget and circumstance.  If you can afford it, I highly recommend the PristineHydro under-the-counter filter.  Another great and affordable option is the TheraH2O countertop filter.

You most likely think, “I don’t like drinking water!” So how do you create daily practices of drinking water?  It is simple, start – it will grow on you, and you will get used to it, but you have to give it a fair chance.  Another option is to use fresh fruits and veggies to infuse your water to make it more interesting.

Over time it will become second nature, and you will find a rhythm that works well for you, your life, and your schedule.

One of the best ways to tell if you are drinking enough water is to look at the color of your urine.  If you are well-hydrated, you should produce colorless or very light yellow urine (keep in mind this doesn’t count the color of vitamins or color additives in food.) If you have very dark yellow urine, it is an indication that you should drink a lot more hydrating water.

Never underestimate just how powerful water is for your health.  Bio-available water is one of the cheapest “medicines” for a dehydrated and chronically sick body.  It is also something you can start right now and is very inexpensive.
