I have known and used adaptogens (a type of herb) for several years now, and it is this classification of beauties that first piqued my interest in herbalism.

It seems like adaptogens have gained much popularity and that everyone seems to be using them – just a reminder, just because everyone is doing something doesn’t mean it is right for you.  As always pay close attention to your own body, and how you respond.

I am personally a huge fan, and I will be sharing why in a minute.

What exactly are adaptogens?

Adaptogens are simply adaptogenic herbs, this means that they have this amazing ability to naturally raise the body’s resistance to stress – both physical and emotional, anxiety, fatigue, and even toxic exposure.  This helps the body to restore and maintain balance.

Adaptogens do exactly what the name suggests.   Adaptogens simply encourage the body to adapt to incoming stress and changes in your environment, either producing and beautiful calming effect or an energetic stimulating effect, depending on the circumstances at hand.

These adaptogens work in non-specific ways, meaning they encourage overall balance within the body, and increase resistance to stress – this is why they are so super helpful and effective.  Unlike with something like caffeine (which has a stimulating effect on the body’s response system) adaptogens won’t result in jitters and crashes.

The use of adaptogens and other herbal remedies have very deep historic roots and the amazing effects of adaptogens go back centuries.  Many ancient cultures, as well as indigenous people of certain regions, have recognized the amazing benefits of using adaptogenic herbs.

I have enjoyed incorporating adaptogens into my routine to help restore hormone balance and function.

Adaptogens And Hormone Balance 1

My favorite adaptogens for hormone balance

Ashwagandha
Ashwagandha is a calming adaptogen and traditionally it has been used to help with insomnia, anxiety, nervousness, exhaustion, as well as adrenal and thyroid support.  This specific herb has the very unique ability to calm the body or stimulate the body, depending on what is needed.

It is important to understand that stress is typically the number one underlying component for hormonal imbalances.  If you are experiencing some unpleasant symptoms like hormonal acne, painful period cramps, or migraines, I always recommend focusing on adrenal fatigue as the starting point for your roadmap in helping your hormones heal.

Please note that if you are sensitive to nightshades or in a state of complete adrenal fatigue it is best to avoid ashwagandha, and to find a different adaptogen to address your specific needs.

Schisandra Berry
Schisandra berry originates in China, and it is a gorgeous woody fruit vine, with very potent detoxification properties.  This specific adaptogen is great for stimulating liver detox, glutathione production (which is the body’s very powerful detoxification nutrient.

Proper liver function is always the key to happy and healthy hormones.  This powerful little berry also strengthens the adrenals and immune system.  Bonus points: it also plays a role in boosting complexion due to its amazing anti-inflammatory properties.

Maca Root
Maca root has been used in Peruvian cultures for centuries.  It is generally used to help boost energy, balance hormones, and boost the immune system.  Maca is very powerful in helping calm PMS symptoms.  It is a great adaptogen for female use.  The earthy and nutty flavor of maca pairs really well with coffee or nourishing hot chocolate.

Adaptogenic Mushrooms
Inside this beautiful world of the adaptogenic kingdom – you will come across a super special collection or group of medicinal mushrooms that tend to offer a lot of the same hormonal balancing effects as the list above, but with the added bonus of extra-immune supportive qualities.
chaga
cordyceps
reishi
lion’s mane

Not all adaptogens are made equally, and just because a food item contains an adaptogen doesn’t mean it is in the right dosage amount to actually reap the benefits.  Don’t fall for this labeling trickery.

It is also important to remember that adaptogenic herbs are generally very powerful, and you only need a small amount at a time.  I recommend investing in some of the pure powders and then simply adding some to bulletproof coffee, smoothies, tea, or adding them in capsule form a few times a week.

Paying special attention to your body’s specific needs, and ques are key.
